Language Fundamentals Grade 5 (Evan-Moor)

Language Fundamentals Grade 5. There are a lot of similarities between what is being taught in this book and what was taught in the fourth grade book, but even though the content is very similar, the skill level is definitely harder.  

Daily Paragraph Editing Grade 4 (Evan-Moor)

Daily Paragraph Editing Grade 4. Learning how to proof-read and find mistakes in written material is a really important skill to learn, and while I’ve previously really liked the Editor in Chief books for teaching this skill, I’ve decided to save the Editor in Chief for the more advanced grades, since Evan Moor does a really good job of making this concept super simple and straight forward for the younger grades.

Just a note, though, I do very intentionally give my kids these books one grade behind the grade that they are actually in. I find that they are still in the process of learning a lot of the things that their paragraph books want them to find, which makes it really hard for them, and even a bit discouraging. So, by giving them the paragraph book a grade behind where they’re at, they are able to hone the skills they learned last year and practice paragraph editing without any unnecessary frustration.

Building Spelling Skills Grade 5 (Evan-Moor)

Building Spelling Skills Grade 5. Evan-Moor is our favorite spelling curriculum of all the ones we have tried. It’s pretty simple and straight forward, while still having some fun activities to help reinforce the lesson.

Of course, if you’re looking for a spelling curriculum that’s a little more “pretty” and colorful, I can also recommend the Abeka Spelling Vocabulary and Poetry book for grade 5. We’ve used that one before and it was also really excellent, I just found the kids were able to work a lot more independently (needing less instruction from the teacher) with the Evan-Moor book.

Abeka Fifth Grade Arithmetic Workbook

Abeka Fifth Grade Arithmetic Workbook. Most of my kids do really well with Abeka math, but I should mention that the company, Abeka, does tend to introduce concepts a little earlier than some children are ready for, and tends to be a little too hard, then, for some students.

That being the case, I also have to recommend this other math curriculum that is also really excellent; it’s what I use with any of my students that seem to be struggling with the Abeka math curriculum (see below!) . . . .

Catch-Up Math Grade 5 Workbook

Catch-Up Math Grade 5 Workbook. This “Catch-Up Math” series is really excellent! I can’t even begin to tell how much we have appreciated and enjoyed it! I would say that this is a perfect series for any students who find math extra difficult, or who really struggle to understand math concepts. The lessons are very simple, and unlike the Abeka series, where it likes to introduce concepts from the next grade to give students an added “boost”, this book ONLY teaches the essential math concepts that the student needs to master in fifth grade – just the essentials, no extras!

Cursive Handwriting Workbook for Kids (Hippidoo)

Cursive Handwriting Workbook for Kids. This is our favorite cursive handwriting book. I usually have my kids work through this book at a slower pace, so it usually takes us from fourth grade through fifth grade before they finish it. But, at whatever time they completely this book, I then give them the next book in this series: The Cursive Handwriting Workbook for Kids (with Science Facts).

Also, I don’t like my kids to neglect practicing manuscript handwriting, so, at the same time as doing cursive handwriting practice I also have them working through this other book that helps with manuscript handwriting: The Print Handwriting Workbook for Kids (with Science Facts).
